Become a Tax Volunteer: Make a Difference in Your Community!

Calling all do-gooders! The IRS is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs for the upcoming tax filing season. Whether you're a student, a retiree, or just someone who wants to lend a helping hand, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a positive impact while gaining valuable experience.

Tax Volunteer

Why Volunteer?

Every year, thousands of volunteers help low- to moderate-income individuals and families navigate the often complex world of taxes—completely for free! These programs are especially vital for underserved communities, including those with disabilities, limited English speakers, and seniors. By volunteering, you can help your neighbors save money and access credits they may not even know they qualify for.

What’s Involved?

  • No Experience Necessary: You don’t need to be a tax expert. The IRS provides free, specialized training to all volunteers.

  • Various Roles Available: While many volunteers prepare tax returns, there are other important roles too, such as interpreters, greeters, and computer specialists.

  • Flexible Hours: Many sites operate during evenings and weekends, making it easier for you to fit volunteering into your schedule. Plus, you can choose to help at either in-person or virtual locations.

How to Get Involved

The peak time for recruiting volunteers is from October to January. While you can sign up at any time, signing up during this window ensures your information is processed quickly. If you’ve signed up recently and your contact info hasn’t changed, there’s no need to register again!

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Visit the IRS Tax Volunteers page to learn more.

  2. Sign up using the VITA/TCE Volunteer and Partner Sign Up form.

  3. About two weeks after signing up, you’ll receive details about local VITA/TCE sites and an invite to a virtual orientation.

Find Your Local VITA/TCE Site

You can easily locate the nearest VITA/TCE site using the VITA Locator Tool. Many of these sites are located in libraries, community centers, schools, and churches.

Make a Difference!

Volunteering with VITA or TCE not only helps your community but also allows you to gain new skills, meet new people, and have a rewarding experience. So why wait? Sign up today and become a part of something meaningful!

For any questions or additional information, feel free to reach out to your local VITA/TCE coordinator or check the IRS website.
